"DownTown" John Brown

From an email from John DeMonde:

...You probably heard the sad news of John Brown’s passing ( see Fr. Jarrett's newsletter to the church).  He developed sepsis from a bedsore and went into to the hospital with dehydration.  After more than a week in ICU he passed away a week and a half ago. His funeral service will be held at on December 27th at 10:00am at Hopewell Baptist Church, 1100 Graham St., Colfax, LA 71417.

Also on January 8th  at 9:00 am there will be a memorial service for John at Holy Cross Anglican Church at 630 Richland Ave., Baton Rouge, LA 70806. We share a church building with Grace Baptist.  His memorial will be during our regular service time.

I thought the Kairos community should know.  I’d appreciate it if you could pass this on to those on the Kairos email list.  John’s heart was in Kairos and for all the brothers and sisters both inside and outside. Though his passing was a struggle, I am certain he is now dancing with joy.

God Bless!

John

Message From Mike Schulz 6/25/22

 Council

At our meeting two weeks ago we planned to meet with Warden Ambeau as soon as possible and then meet again immediately afterwards to plan upcoming retreats.

We have not yet met with her and may not have her correct contact information. Indication from the Chaplain’s office is that we should not expect to hold retreats soon due to staffing shortages at the prison. As agreed with Warden Hooper, we should hear this from Warden Ambeau and will continue attempting to make that connection.

Thank you for your patience,
Mike Schultz

 Council:

I hope you’re all doing well and the enjoying the break from the heat given by the rain.

Saturday, May 28th 6:00pm-8:30pm there will be a Kairos reception with Evelyn from KPMI at St. John United Methodist Church located at 9375 Highland Rd.

We will have Jambalaya, salad, dessert, drinks, and fellowship. Please let me know in the next week if you’ll be able to make it so I can provide Duane a headcount for planning.

Dear Kairos Family:

Great News: Angola is once again open for visitors and volunteers!

Monthly reunions are still on the first Saturday of each month and will resume April 2. Visits to Death Row for Prayer and Share each Monday will resume next week.

The prison currently requires volunteers to be vaccinated, boosted, and wear a mask. Like all Covid rules, we don't know how those may change over time.

We are also discussing dates for the next weekend retreat to be led by Dr Jeb Broyles as well as the next Death Row retreat. Please prayerfully consider joining those teams.

For those who have all their paperwork in order to enter the prison: Thank you and please prayerfully consider coming to an upcoming monthly reunion to help re-establish our presence.

If you don't know if your paperwork is all in order, please contact me or Mike Ryan and we will confirm the list

For those who haven't done DOC training in the last year, here are the steps to do it online:

  1. Go to  https://doc.louisiana.gov/public-programs-resources/public-information/ and scroll down to the volunteer section.
  2. Follow the website instructions, including: review the documents, watch the video, and fill out the Volunteer Orientation Training Request for Certificate Form.
  3. Email the Request for Certificate form per website instructions. You should receive the certificate back in less than a week.
  4. Print the following 4 forms and send them to Mike Ryan:

• Volunteer Services Training Certificate of Completion

• Volunteer Registration and Agreement Application

• Sexual Assault and Sexual Misconduct with Offenders Volunteer-Intern-Contractor Acknowledgement Form

• Rules and Guidelines for Volunteers or Guests Form
